First Flight

First Flight
-----------
This happened a week back. I was home (refer parent's home as home :) ) and am really amazed that birds always pick our house *read balcony* to pitch their tents *read nest*. This has been happening every year. I guess I was in 8th when the first tent was noticed. It was more like a wasp nest. We actually thought it was a wasp nest and asked some gardener to clear it up. Unfortunately, there were 2 young birds and that was the end of it. My mom was upset and guess still has it in her mind when something ill happens.
In the last two years( I am never at home, just visit them alternate weekends), I have seen many birds building their nests. I think the success rate is just 1 in 5 attempts.
Coming back to teh present, here there were two birds *read parents* who had their nest built balancing on just one nail. The nail supports the drying line. I arrived at around 6 30 a.m and I opened the balcony door to see two young birds *read chicks * on the balcony floor. I enquired and found that it was the result of a mischevious act of Fatso. I am using Fatso becoz this particular chick was the biggest, had a tummy already and a cute one too to look at. Fatso got too enthusiatic and got his sibling Thinloo to fall off the nest. Thinloo as his name suggests was thin and a lil' weak. He got himself injured in the fall and was motionless for more than an hour as I was told later. But his parents picked him up and pushed him to a corner to rest. Mr Fatso, unhurt was just biding his time to recoup himself for his first flight.
The action started around afternoon. The day was cloudy. Dad was the feeder for the parents and their children. The birds were nto scared of anyone in our house. They would just come very near us and pick food. They wouldn't even scare us even if we came near the young ones. I guess its called bonding and I feel nice that they chose our family. So, here we were feeding the birds. The parents were trying to coax Fatso to climb by constantly prividng him food and then teasing him to come and get the food from teh balcony parapet. Fatso. tried once ,t wice, thrice. I wondered how with his ovre sized tummy he coudl fly. The first time he flew , he went up for 15 sec and hit the balcony wall and fell down. He attempted this many times. And he got tired.. Now, our Thinloo was still motionless. I thougth this is the end of Thinloo. The END must be near. But all of a sudden, Thinloo got a new lease of life and the parents started feeding him. He justateand sat motionless. I thought he was the laziest of the chicks.
Fatso after his numerous attempts got frustrated. Fatso had an amzing jump. He could well have beaten anyone with his frog like jump. It remined me of the frog races I had won when i was a kiddo too. The parents kept persuading Fatso to attempt flying. Then, the parents hit upon a plan and asked Fatso to climb the pot where a Money plant had its branches hanging. Its amazing how the parents communicated this idea. I didn't hear any sound. May be teh sound is not audible to the human ears (20-2000 decibel range if i can remmeber correclty). Mr fatso jumped on to the pot and with all his might started climbing the Money Plant. After 10 minutes of constant trying, Mr fatso had won the first battle of conquerign the towering Balcony wall. I thought Fatso would fall just like Humpty Dumpty in the nursery rhyme. Fatso waited for two minutes and lo he made his first flight. It was not smooth, His flappping of wings , his body motion was not stream lined but he had made it to the first branch * branch of a mango tree*.

My mom was satisfied that one was successful. There was Thinloo still!! Did I miss out to mention that there was Mr. Confident still in the nest. All I could only see initially was the constant shit he was pumping out. Thinloo meanwhile suddenly got courageous, adventurous and started hoppeign around. he also made a few attempts to fly but in vain. His parents kept trying to help him to fly. Alas, darkness set in and he simply crawled to the corner of the balcony.
All that happened was on a Sat. Sun started with a bright sunshine. I think it was around 8ish when I opened the balcony door. Everything was normal,. Thinloo the weaakling still motionless in a corner and Mr. Confident now perched on top of the nest. Suddenly at around 11 30am, I found Mr Confident fly towards the window. Firrst flight of Mr Confident was perfect. It landed on the window of the bedroom. The very next moment he took the next flight and he fell on the floor. The towering Balcony wall again had to be conquered yet again. Before I could even think of how he would do it., he made an attemp and he perched on top of the blacony parapet. The next flight in to ht ebranches fo the mango tree. Mr Confident had done it all on his own without his parent's advises. Just one to go now. But, I had to leave for Bangalore too.
The next mornign I called up to hear about Thinloo and he had also made it thanks to his parents and also his never die spirit.
It is really amazing how your parents just guide you in those very first steps of life. They protect you, feed you and guide you. True spirit of life was seen. I have some pics. I didn't want to disturb the birds in attempting to take pics or record a video. None of us even touched the birds coz I have heard and read that the parents leave their children if we touched them. I gues the past sins have been washed away with this triumph and we are eagerly waiting for the next set of birds to nest in our good old balcony.
* I hate to proof read again Never did it in school so I refrain from doing it now :P*
